Walk and Talk Therapy
What is walk and talk therapy?
Walk and talk therapy is a form of therapy that takes place while walking outdoors. This approach combines movement in nature with traditional therapeutic approaches.
Benefits of walk and talk therapy
Enhanced mood and reduced anxiety
Walking stimulates the release of endorphins, which can improve your mood and reduce feelings of anxiety. The act of moving your body can help you to feel more relaxed and comfortable during sessions
Natural setting
Being outdoors allows us to engage with nature, which has been shown to have a calming effect on the mind. The sights, sounds, and smells of the natural environment can create a soothing atmosphere that encourages openness and exploration
Increased comfort and openness
For some people, traditional therapy settings can feel intimidating. Walking side by side can reduce the pressure of direct eye contact, making it easier for people to express thoughts and feelings. This sense of comfort can lead to deeper insights and more meaningful dialogue
Mindfulness and presence
Walking in nature encourages mindfulness, allowing you to focus on the present moment. This practice can help you become more aware of your thoughts and emotions, facilitating deeper insights and self-reflection
Considerations before beginning walk and talk therapy
While walk and talk therapy offers many benefits, it’s essential to consider a few factors before beginning this type of therapy
Privacy and confidentiality
Walking in public spaces can present challenges related to privacy and confidentiality. It’s important to note that, while I will do my best to protect your confidentiality, I cannot guarantee it due to the nature of being in a public setting.
Weather and environment
Outdoor sessions are subject to weather conditions. Rain, wind, snow, ice, or extreme cold may impact the ability to have a comfortable and safe counseling session. A plan will be in place for rescheduling or adapting sessions based on environmental factors.
Therapeutic goals
Walk and talk therapy may not be suitable for all counseling goals or issues. Some people may benefit more from traditional therapy settings, particularly when working through issues that require more focused attention.
Questions/concerns
Before choosing to begin outdoor sessions, we will discuss any concerns you have related to these considerations and I will answer any questions you may have to the best of my ability.
